Biography

Born in Paris, compatriot of those who were attracted by the call of the Fatherland, young Alice finds herself among the great masters of their time like Teryan and Charents, Kochar and Saryan, Vagharshian and Nersisyan.

Whether impressed by this or by the fact that Komitas’s body was on board their ship while immigrating to Armenia, Alice was destined to become an Artist.

In 1954 graduating from Yerevan State Arts & Theatre Arts Institute, Melikian began to participate in the Republic’s and “All-Union” Exhibitions at age 24, attracting the attention of the professional art society and the Art Ministry of Armenia.

 

Today Alice Melikian is famous in the Republic of Armenia and Diaspora, known for her portraiture. Most of her sculptures are of renowned people of our times. Melikian’s work is recognized by expressiveness and, at the same time, accuracy of likeness with an ability to capture in a person the most distinguished characteristic of their personality.

The subiect matter basically is one: outstanding sons and daughters of the Armenian people and friends of Armenia. While it may seem her themes and compositional decisions are one-sided, one becomes excited b her originality in perceiving ideas with clean, flowing lines and emotions without artificiality.

In 1978 Melikian became part of the Armenian Diaspora of Los Angeles.

Despite her many relocations she has never stopped creating her art staying true to her beliefs and philosophy. Her more than 150 sculptures embody the classical and national tradition of representational art. Alice Melikian’s works are part of permanent collections of Museums, Galleries and private collectors.
